Mr. I. L. Narasimha Rao is the Project Manager at CDAC (Center for Development of Advanced Computing) a scientific society doing Research and Development under Government of India, spreading Information Security Services all over India. He was the Chairman at Computer Society of India, Hyderabad Chapter.
Mr. Rao explained information security is a set of strategies for managing the processes, tools and policies necessary to prevent, detect, document and counter threats to digital and non-digital information. He focused on the objectives, sensitive information is only disclosed to authorized parties with confidentiality, prevent unauthorized modification of data with integrity and guarantee the data can be accessed by authorized parties when requested (availability). He also discussed the Awareness Project that Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has approved in 2005 entitled Information Security Education and Awareness (ISEA) which was completed in 2014 and Phase II of the said Project was approved in April 2014. The awareness program is essential for all the Internet users in India since most of the home or individual users are being targeted as a base to attack the Government, Banking services and other infrastructure.
He stated most of these attacks are happening because the systems could be easily compromised owing to negligence or lack of knowledge in information security on the part of individual users while accessing Internet or sharing the data with others. There is a need to create awareness among various stake holders including general public, student communities, children, etc., as their interests has to be secured. During the session he mentioned a national level awareness campaign is launched to cover various sections of the society by undertaking several activities such as targeting the Internet users through creating and disseminating awareness material, introduction of information security curriculum at school level by interacting with various school boards, CBSE, NCERT, etc., organizing awareness workshops, cyber security awareness weeks in collaboration with local state government law enforcement agencies, design and developing awareness material for various segments, multi-lingual portal, etc.
The workshop was knowledgeable as it highlighted different threats online and how to safe guard from them. It was an interactive session as the students have cleared their doubts regarding how to secure data and cyber-attacks.
