One Day Session on "Group Discussion & Personal Interview"

CSI Student Chapter of Dronacharya College of Engineering, Gurgaon in collaboration with IBS Business School, Gurgaon organized One Day Session on "Group Discussion & Personal Interview" for the final year students of IT, CSIT & ECS Department on 12th October 2017.
The session was conducted by Mr. Rajesh Sharma, Faculty Member and a trainer for Soft Skills at IBS Business School, Gurgaon. He is having 9+ years of experience in Education industry. He commenced his career as Personality Development Trainer. He has executed an NSDC project in UP, Bihar, Punjab & Haryana. Having a diversified job location has enabled him to understand the basic hurdles a student face in their academic period.
The main aim of the event was to prepare students for the world of work and provide advice and guidance on developing their group discussion & interviewing skills.
Mr. Rajesh Sharma started his lecture by sharing his experience with the students. He explained how a student can make a good impression while performing in group discussion. He explained the basic skills are judged in group discussion like how good you are at communication with others, how you behave and interact with group, how open minded are you, your listening skill, how you put forward your views, your leadership and decision making skills, your analysis skill and subject knowledge, your problem solving and critical thinking skill and your attitude and confidence. He also discussed various points that every student should remember. He has shared some important tips to crack group discussions like try to initiate the GD before other do so and by initiating you will give a positive signal to the interviewer, always maintain eye contact with all the participants, be friendly with the other participants and never be rude and impolite towards them, forget not that each participant’s views are equally important just as yours, when a participant started expressing his/her view, do not interrupt in the middle and let him/her finish the view or opinion and then you can seek clarification later, take care of your body language cues such as – posture, eye contact, gestures, facial expressions, body movements etc. Further he discussed always listen carefully to the comments or views that are being expressed by the other participants. Express your views and feelings very clearly so that you can reduce the misunderstandings to the maximum extent. Overcome your fear and shyness. Be always positive while you are participating in GD and have confidence in yourself. He said that your active involvement in the GD is very important and must keep on exchanging your views confidently whenever an opportunity comes to you. In case if you can’t accept the view/comment/idea that is expressed by the other participants you may disagree but do it politely. He also said that for a healthy group discussion each participant has to keep their arguments short and concise as much as possible.
Mr. Rajesh Sharma said that success in job interview starts with a solid foundation of knowledge. The more research you will conduct, the more you will understand the employer and better you will be able to answer interview questions. He said before going for an interview, prepare your answer for the very common questions usually asked in the interviews.
He also discussed the dressing sense and body language for an interview. He said always wear ironed formal clothes. Never wear too much jewelry or a strong fragrance. He then explained body language for interview. He defined that body language is a form of non - verbal communication, consisting of body pose, gestures, and eye movements. He discussed the importance of good eye contact, smile, open body language, practice for handshake & accept an offer for a glass of water. Eye plays important role during interview. According to him communication during interview is an essential part of interview. It is necessary to listen carefully to interviewers questions, avoid interrupting the interviewers & try not to use jargon in your answers or questions.
The session enabled candidates to have a fair idea about the sort of things they are going to experience at actual interviews, and prepare them how accurately they can deal with . The students understood how to deal with nervousness. Experiences shared about group discussion and interview skills during the lecture were helpful and it enhanced the knowledge of students to a great extent.
