Scilab - Lecture Demonstration

Lecture demonstration on Scilab was organized by FOSSEE team, IIT Bombay on 12th October 2017. The program was conducted under the aegis of Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya National Mission for Teachers and Teaching (PMMMNMTT), MHRD, Govt of India. Total 89 remote centres across India attended the live session. 18 faculty members from various department of Dronacharya College of Engineering, Gurgaon attended the session. The key speaker of the event was Prof. Kannan Moudgalya, Sr. ProjectManager, Department of CSE, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay.
Scilab is a free and open source alternative to Matlab. Scilab is easy to use and a powerful computing environment. Prof. Kannan discussed the importance of Scilab in the field of engineering. In his speech Prof.Kannan focussed on following key points:
- Locate the Scilab code already available for the textbook that is being used in university curriculum
- Execute it on the cloud, with or without modifications
- Find out through examples how to make Scilab function calls
- How to set new problems for your assignments, quiz, labs, exams and so on
- How to do all of the above from your laptop or a smart phone
- How to migrate existing labs to Scilab effortlessly
- Use some of the outstanding Scilab Toolboxes developed by the FOSSEE Team.
The Scilab cloud is named as GARUDA. Through the Scilab cloud students can easily perform Scilab experiments without installing the needed software. Prof.Kannan also demonstrated hands on experiment for designing IIR Butterworth filter using Scilab. The whole session was innovative and knowledge worthy.
