Swarna Jayanti Two Day National Workshop on
“Data Analysis Using SPSS”
On
20th & 21st March 2017
“Swarna Jayanti two Day National Workshop on “Data Analysis Using SPSS” was organized by Department of Statistics and O.R. Kurukshetra University, Kurukshetra on 20th & 21st March 2017. The workshop endeavored to guide the researchers to appropriate analysis of data using the statistical software. Mr. Ashok kumar,Associate Professor, APS, Dronacharya College of Engineering attended the workshop.
The workshop Inaugurated with the presence of Prof. (Dr.) Kailash Chandra Sharma Vice Chancellor KUK; Prof.(Dr.) Bhu Dev Sharma Department of mathematics, JIIT, Noida; Prof. (Dr.) S.C. Malik Department of Statistics M.D. University, Rohtak; Dr. M.S.Kadyan, Chairperson and Dr. Jitender Kumar, organizing Secretary. Prof. (Dr.) Bhu Dev Sharma motivated the participants and guided the researchers to use number and types of statistical software packages available for appropriate analysis.
Day-1: 20th March 2017
The first session delivered by Professor Suresh K. Sharma, Punjab University Chandigarh. He expressed his thoughts on Measurement Scales- Nature of variables, types of data. Introduction to SPSS, entering variables, Labeling variables, labeling values, entering string variables , transformation of variables , exporting and importing data files from other packages, selecting cases, recording data measure of central tendency and their interpretation OLAP cubes, dispersion, skewness , quartiles, percentiles, and kurtosis.
In the second session, Dr. Parmil kumar from Jammu University, Jammu explained all the key aspects of graphical representation of data- bar charts , stacked bar, histograms, line diagram, pie diagram, box plot, multiple box plot, error bar, stem – and- leaf diagram, exporting graph ,three dimensional graph.
In the third session, Dr. Gill from Punjab University Chandigarh explained all the key aspects of Inferencing with SPSS. He focused on Statistical Hypothesis, Level of Significance, Parametric and Non parametric Tests, their advantages and disadvantages. He told, SPSS is one of the most preferred tool adopted by different researchers to present data in their research work. Using SPSS different graphs based on different complex data can be drawn easily and effectively. It reduces the time and efforts of the researchers.
Day-2: 21st march 2017
First session was delivered by Dr. Jitender Kumar from Kurukshetra University, Kurukshetra. He delivered a lecture on Correlation and Regression, Multiple Regression, Partial Regression and Adjusted R2. He advised to use SPSS Statistics for creating a scatter plot and then visually inspect the scatter plot to check the linearity. For checking the residuals of the regression line are approximately normally distributed or not either a histogram or Normal P-P Plot, SPSS Statistics can be used.
In the second session, Dr. Sangeeta expressed her views on SPSS package widely used for conducting statistical analysis, manipulating data and generating tables and graphs that summarize data. She discussed that SPSS can provide a single, standardized quality control and improvement solution that can be easily validated that cover the whole range of manufacturing statistics, including simple descriptive statistics and graphics, QC charting, capability analyses for normal and Non-normal distributions, design of experiment (DOE) much more.
In the third session Dr. Kanchan Jain explained all the key aspects of Inferencing with SPSS. She focused on Statistical Hypothesis, Level of Significance, Parametric and Non parametric Tests, their advantages and disadvantages. She told, SPSS is one of the most preferred tool adopted by different researchers to present data in their research work. Using SPSS different graphs based on different complex data can be drawn easily and effectively. She also covered logistic regression and survival analysis.
Professor (Dr.) S.C.Malik from Department of Statistics M.D. University, Rohtak, concluded with the valedictory speech. He drew the inference that the statistical analysis performed by these packages is easy, quick and more accurate. The time saved can be devoted to the more important task of data analysis.
The Workshop was knowledgeable and approachable. The subject material was useful and was amicable. The workshop had interesting and truly knowledgeable sessions with clear goals and meaningful contents.
