Workshop on Design of Hydraulic Structure
5th April 2017
Department of Civil Engineering, Dronacharya College of Engineering, Gurgaon under the banner of AGI (Association of Geospatial Industries) organized a workshop on “Design of Hydraulic Structure” on 5th April 2017. Students of 4th and 6th semesters Civil Engineering Department attended the workshop. Prof. A.K. Keshari was the resource person in the workshop.
Areas of interest of Prof. A. K. Keshari includes hydrological & environmental modeling, groundwater flow & pollution modeling, groundwater recharge & sustainable development, remote sensing & GIS, optimization & FEM, waste management & sewerage system, policy analysis & risk assessment and snow & avalanche. Prof. Keshari has vast experience of teaching at undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral levels as well as research & consulting in areas of water resources & environmental engineering and geo-informatics.
Prof. Keshari started the lecture with the introduction to dams. He stated, dam is the solid barrier constructed at suitable location across river valley to store the flowing water. He also explained the importance of dams. He told about the classification of dam. Necessary data for the construction of the dam are location and site map, hydrologic data, climatic data, geological data, water demand data, dam site data (foundation, material, tailwater).
Later, Prof. Keshari explained weirs. A weir is a barrier across the horizontal width of a river that alters the flow characteristics of the water and usually results in a change in the vertical height of the river level. There are many designs of weir, but commonly water flows freely over the top of the weir crest before cascading down to a lower level.
Prof. Keshari explaining the spillways, told spillways is used to pass excess flow of water in control fashion. He described two types spillways are there unregulated and regulated.
Principal Prof. (Dr.) B.M.K. Prasad, HOD of Civil Engineering Department, faculties and students of Civil Engineering Department witnessed the workshop with high enthusiasm and benefited from thewisdoms of respected speaker.
