Exposure visit to CSIR -NPL, New Delhi

17th October 2025

Dronacharya College of Engineering, Gurugram organized an educational exposure visit to the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research – National Physical Laboratory (CSIR–NPL), New Delhi, on 17th October 2025 for first-year students of the Computer Science and Engineering Department. The visit, coordinated by Prof. Neha Raghav, was held on the occasion of CSIR–NPL Open Day, an annual event that provides students an opportunity to witness the institute’s scientific achievements, advanced research facilities, and real-world applications of technology.

The primary objective of the visit was to expose students to practical scientific and technological research, highlighting how experimentation and innovation contribute to national development. The initiative aimed to bridge the gap between theoretical classroom learning and practical applications by allowing students to observe firsthand how scientific concepts are translated into working models and experiments in laboratories.

On arrival, students were welcomed by the NPL staff and given an introduction to the institute’s legacy, major research areas, and its pivotal role as India’s National Metrology Institute. NPL maintains national standards for measurement, ensuring accuracy and reliability across scientific and industrial sectors. The introductory session included a documentary showcasing NPL’s contributions to defense, space research, electronics, and other high-precision scientific domains.

During the visit, students toured several research laboratories. At the Superconductivity Lab, they observed a demonstration of the Meissner Effect and learned about practical applications of superconductors in transportation and medical imaging. The Raman Spectroscopy Lab introduced students to spectroscopy techniques for material identification, while the Sound and Vibration Lab offered a rare opportunity to experience an anechoic chamber, where all sound reflections are absorbed. These lab visits allowed students to connect physics-based innovations to computational modelling and data analysis, core areas in computer science.

Students also had the opportunity to interact with NPL scientists, gaining insights into research methodologies, the importance of precision, and the interdisciplinary nature of modern scientific research. Discussions highlighted the integration of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and data analytics into research practices, motivating students to explore creative and research-oriented career paths.

Under the guidance of Prof. Neha Raghav, students actively engaged in discussions, reflected on the synergy between science and computing, and explored how technological innovations complement scientific progress. The visit enhanced their curiosity, understanding, and appreciation for scientific research, inspiring them to pursue academic and research excellence.

Overall, the visit was highly informative and motivating. It successfully instilled scientific curiosity, provided meaningful exposure to India’s leading research facility, and strengthened the connection between academic learning and real-world innovation, leaving students inspired to excel in both education and research.
