A TWO-DAY WORKSHOP ON LANGUAGE SKILLS IN ENGLISH
The department of Applied Sciences and Humanities of Dronacharya College of Engineering, Gurgaon organized a Two-day Workshop (under the Faculty Development Program) on “Language Skills in English” from 8th to 9th January 2015. The objective of this workshop was to provide resources for enhancing the academic attributes of faculty members particularly in English Language.
Addressing the participants Hon’ble Principal Prof.(Dr.) B.M.K.Prasad expressed that this workshop is an opportunity to develop the proficiency skills in English. He further opined that good communication skills in English are an indispensable asset which empowers an individual to perform efficiently.
Inaugurating the workshop The Convener Prof.(Dr.) Sri Krishan Yadav described that communication skills i.e. Grammar, Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing are essential abilities which determine a person’s competency to fit into a particular profession or situation. He emphatically stated that in today’s global world, the importance of English cannot be ignored as English is the most common language spoken everywhere and has become a language of utility too.
Hon’ble Chief-Guest Prof. (Dr.) K.N. Masaldan, Principal (Retd.) PGDAV College, University of Delhi, Delhi highlighted the importance of functional aspects of language skills i.e. Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking which is required for survival and growth in every profession. He also demonstrated the usage of Parts of Speech, Subject-Verb Agreement, concord, coherence and other implications related to English language and provided a list of useful books in this context .
During different technical sessions, the resource persons Dr. Nandita Choudhury, Dr. Suchitra Deswal, Dr. Pradeep Chaswal, Dr. Parul Mishra and Dr. Sunil Mishra made the participants well-versed on Grammar, Reading, Speaking, Listening and Writing skills respectively. They also shared useful web-links leading to improvement in Language skills.
This workshop was very much useful as it provided a forum to the academicians to deliberate upon the various aspects of language skills in English leading to qualification in International Test of English Proficiency (iTEP) recognized by the USA.
Around 100 participants attended the technical sessions of the workshop enthusiastically. The participants and the resource persons were given away certificates by Hon’ble Principal Prof. (Dr.) B.M. K. Prasad in the presence of the Convener, the Registrar and other dignitaries of the college.
The workshop ended on 9th January 2015 with a vote of thanks by Dr. Sunil Mishra, the Coordinator, who expressed his heart-felt gratitude to the Management, Hon’ble Principal, the Convener, the Chief-Guest, the Registrar, all HODs for chairing technical sessions , the resource person, the members of organizing committee and the participants for their cooperation as well as involvement in making the workshop a success.
