Talk on R&D Opportunities in the Country Vis-à-vis Role of Microwave Devices
5th October, 2015
The Electronics and Communication department of Dronacharya College of Engineering, Gurgaon organized a talk byDr. S.N. Joshi Emeritus Scientist, CSIR-CEERI ,Central Electronics Engineering Research Institute on the topic “R & D Opportunities in the Country vis-a vis Role of microwave Devices” on 5th October, 2015.
The Research and Development (R&D) is an important contributor to economy of any country and hence growth and sustainability of R&D is vital for nations. With the government’s support, the R&D sector in India is all set to witness some robust growth in the coming years. Engineering R&D market in India is estimated to grow at a CAGR of 14 % to reach US$ 42 billion by 2020. India is also expected to witness strong growth in its agriculture and pharmaceutical sectors as the government is investing large sums to set up dedicated research centers for R&D in these sectors.
The speaker started his lecture with introduction to different labs of India where various R&D opportunities are available.CSIR, DAE, ISRO, DRDO, Deity, IISc, IIT’s and NIT’s have well-resourced, highly -equipped R&D laboratories in the country. Dr. Joshi discussed the kinds of support available in the R&D sector. He mentioned that the Council of Scientific and Institution Research (CSIR) supports research through Human Research Development Group (HRDG). Many other R&D projects are also supported by this council. It also gives grants to universities, post graduates institutions and IITs. Many opportunities exist to carry out R&D in India for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs).
DRDO labs deserve mention for providing support to new research projects. Dr. S.N. Joshi talked about the different organization such as Department of Electronics and Information Technology, Department of Atomic energy, Department of Science and Technology that supports various R&D projects through activities like holding National/International Conferences.
In the second half of his lecture Dr. Joshi educated the students about the role of microwave devices in research, wherein he explained about different devices such as Gyrotrons, plasma devices, semi-conductor devices, hybrid micro units & integrated circuits design which are used in RADAR and SONAR. He also discussed about the areas of research in electronics systems like “Agri electronics, Embedded Systems”.
Dr. S.N. Joshi gave information on the infrastructure related to semi-conductor area wherein different topics such asSilicon wafer fabrication, Water cleaning & photolithography, Smart Pond Management System, Spurious milk detection system and Plastic sorting system” were discussed. The students were informed that they can also take advantage from the various programs of “Indian National Satellite System (INSAT), Indian Remote Sensing (IRS) and Space Capsule Recovery Experiment” run by government of India in the field of engineering and technology.
Dr. Joshi ended his session by explaining about the different opportunities available at CSIR, CEERI-Pilani to carry out research work.
Overall, the lecture was very interactive and informative for students who want to pursue their career in the field of research.
