Faculty Development Program on Cloud Computing
7th August 2015
Huawei Network Academy in collaboration with INDOVISION organized a one day Faculty Development Program on Cloud Computing on 7th August 2015 at Huawei Academy, Gurgaon. Mr. Amar Saraswat, Assistant Professor from Computer Science Engineering Dept, Dronacharya College of Engineering, Gurgaon attended the program.
Huawei is a leading global ICT (Information Communication technology) solutions provider. The company focuses on providing technical trainings to Corporate & Engineering Sector.
Mr. Vinay, Director, Indovision inaugurated welcomed the participants and gave a brief view about the topics used in ICT like Wireless Telecom, Data Communication, Cloud Computing, Transmission, and Networking.
In the first session, Mr. Bharat Bagai, Technical Lead, IBM, introduced the participants with various types of storage devices such as Solid State Drive, Network Attached Storage (NAS), Directly Attached Storage (DAS) and Storage Area Network (SAN). He discussed that Network-attached storage (NAS) is a file-level computer data storage server connected to a computer network providing data access to a heterogeneous group of clients and is specialized for serving files either by its hardware, software, or configuration whereas Direct-attached storage (DAS) is digital storage directly attached to the computer accessing it, as opposed to storage accessed over a computer network. Examples of DAS include hard drives, optical disc drives, and storage on external drives.
Mr. Vinay, Director, Indovision inaugurated the pogram. He lectured on the topics used in ICT like Wireless Telecom, Data Communication, Cloud Computing, Transmission, and Networking. The first session was based on Storage Technology, in which Mr.
Mr. Bharat explained various concepts related to types and service model of Cloud Computing. With the help of presentation, speaker explained various cloud computing postulates such as self-service model, elasticity, Multi-tenancy, Resource abstraction, rapid deployment, CAPEX and variable OPEX. He also explained about various building blocks for cloud computing, virtualization, service automation and standardization. He said that delivery models such as IaaS, PaaS and SaaS. Focussing more on Software as a Service (SaaS), Mr. Bharat described that it is the top layer of cloud computing, Software as a Service is typically built on top of a Platform as a Service solution, whether that platform is publicly available or not, and provides software for end-users such as email, word processing, or a business CRM. Software as a Service is typically charged on a per-user and per-month basis, and companies have the flexibility to add or remove users at any time without addition costs beyond the monthly per-user fee.
Mr. Hanuman, Trainer INDOVISION explained various concepts such as Application Programming Interface (API), Combination of IaaS and PaaS, file systems, and data recovery. He discussed about RAID Technology (Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks), which is a data storage virtualization technology that combines multiple physical disk drive components into a single logical unit for the purposes of data redundancy, performance improvement, or both. The students were introduced to various levels of RAID such as RAID 0-Striping, RAID 1-Mirroring, and RAID 5- Stripping with parity across drives.
A lab visit was scheduled in the end, where Mr. Hanuman showed various types of servers, including rack servers. He also explained about changing of disk drives in case of failures without switching off the server.
The program ended with a question and answer session where the doubts raised by the participants were cleared. Then in the feedback session the participants shared their views. At the Certificate Distribution session Mr. Manish Goyal, General Manager, INDOVISION distributed certificates to all the participants.
The FDP was very enriching and full of knowledge, and provided the basic information about cloud computing, exploring several research area topics.
