Faculty Development Program On “Java Programming & Fundamentals”
27th to 31st July 2015
Oracle Academy organized a faculty development program on Java Fundamentals & Programming from 27th to 31st July 2015 at Bharati Vidyapeeth College of Engineering, New Delhi. Four Faculty members, Ms. Poonam Yadav, from ECS Department, Ms. Neha Malik, and Ms. Kshitija Pol from CSE Department and Ms. Rashim Kumar from IT Department of Dronacharya College of Engineering, Gurgaon got an opportunity to attend the program.
Prof. Dharmender Jain, Principal, Bharati Vidyapeeth College of Engineering gave the inaugural address and welcomedMs. Suji Gopalan Uchil, Manager, Oracle Academy.
Day One:
Ms. Suji Gopalan Uchil discussed about Carnegie Mellon’s Alice, a platform to create animated stories, movies and games by dragging and dropping graphic tiles that contain standard Java programming statements, programs that animate 3D objects. In the process, participants also learnt basic object-oriented programming terminology and concepts such as procedure definition, algorithms, functions and conditional statements. The participants were taught to make simple game using Greenfoot software and to add more functionality to the game. Then they were asked to prepare a group presentation on the topic.
Day Two:
The second day of the workshop was dedicated to understand basic programming concepts to create Java programs. During the workshop the participants learned how to make simple programs using Eclipse software. The concepts of Java were described in a very interactive manner. Ms. Suji Gopalan Uchil explained the concepts of
1. using loops, variables and strings.
2. creating an inventory of Java fundamentals
3. Programing with data types and operators
Day Three:
On the third day of training program, Ms. Suji Gopalan Uchil, delivered lectures on the topics like compiling with Eclipse, Control flow statements and Blocks of Code. She taught about programming with Data Types and Operators. In this training session she covered the topics like using Program Control Statements, Classes, Objects and Methods. Very interestingly she discussed about different methods of using arrays, ways of handling errors and using String objects. The third day of training program summed up with the discussion on programming of team project.
Day Four:
The discussion started on Greenfoot which is developed and maintained at the University of Kent, with support from Oracle. It is free software, released under the GPL license. Greenfoot is a Java interactive development environment created to help students learn. It allows easy development of two-dimensional graphical applications, like simulations and interactive games. Using Greenfoot, students can learn the Java programming language in a fun, interesting way, and it is also visually engaging.
Day Five:
On the last day of program, participants appeared for an online Examination on Java Programming & Fundamental. All group members presented their Game projects created by using Greenfoot.
Prof. (Dr.) Vanita Jain, Dean Academics, BVCOE, gave the vote of thanks. Certificate was awarded to the participants.
This whole session traversed some of the important topics regarding Greenfoot and Java through examples of working applications. Overall the five days sessions proved to be very productive and informative.
