Session on Casting
24th May 2023
Department of Mechanical Engineering, Dronacharya College of Engineering, Gurugram organized a "Session on Casting" on 24th May, 2023 for First year students. The Prof. Neha Chauhan supervised the session.
The objective of the session was to provide a valuable insight of the manufacturing process particularly on Metal Casting.
Prof. Neha started the session and briefly elaborated the journey of first industrial revolution to fifth industrial revolution. Next she explained casting processes. She said, a casting process involves pouring molten metal into a mold, letting the metal cool and solidify, and removing the part from the mold. Next she explained moulding materials and their requirements.
Moving the session further she explained various casting methods, viz.,metal casting sand casting investment casting, pressure die casting, centrifugal casting, continuous casting, thin roll casting, Mould design, Casting defects and their remedies
Next she explained in details steps involved in metal casting processes:
- Making mould cavity
- Material is first liquefied by properly heating it in a suitable furnace.
- Liquid is poured into a prepared mould cavity
- allowed to solidify
- product is taken out of the mould cavity, trimmed and made to shape
After the session, Prof. Neha Chauhan along with students went to the lab for hands on session. The session aimed at teaching experiments on heat and mass transfers and enable participants to conduct the experiments on their own.
Students performed the experiments and gained the practical knowledge.
