Participation in Independence Day Celebration at Red Fort
5th - 15th August 2024
On the momentous occasion of the 78th Independence Day of India, the National Service Scheme (NSS) volunteers from Dronacharya College of Engineering Gurugram participated in a special event at the historic Red Fort; a symbol of India's rich heritage and enduring struggle for freedom in Delhi under the guidance of programme officer Dr. Anupam Dalal. The visit was more than just a commemoration of India's Independence; it was an immersive experience that deepened the volunteers' understanding of the sacrifices and the legacy that have shaped the nation. The event held from August 5th to August 15th, 2024, included training, participation in Independence Day celebrations, and interaction with NCC cadets from different parts of India.
The theme of this year’s Independence Day was ‘Viksit Bharat @ 2047’. The celebrations served as a platform to provide a renewed push to the Government’s efforts towards transforming the country into a developed nation by 2047.
Training and Preparation
The volunteers underwent a comprehensive training program during their stay at the Red Fort. The training covered various aspects of Indian history, culture, and traditions. They learned about the struggles of India for Independence, the sacrifices made by great freedom fighters, and the importance of preserving cultural heritage.
Schedule for NSS volunteers
The NSS cadets commenced their preparation for the Independence Day celebrations with regular practice sessions held at the Red Fort. The initial days were focused on familiarizing the participants with the event's sequence and honing their skills. The sessions were intensive, laying a solid foundation for the rehearsals and final performance.
5th - 9th August 2024: Security Pass Distribution and Logistics Arrangements
As the event date approached, security measures were heightened. Between 5th and 9th August, participants received their security passes, ensuring a smooth and secure entry into the event venue. Additionally, bus arrangements were finalized, and refreshments were provided to the cadets, ensuring they were well-prepared and cared for during the practice sessions.
11th August 2024: Uniform Distribution
Uniforms were distributed to all participants on 11th August, ensuring that everyone was properly attired for the full dress rehearsal and the final event. The day also marked the final preparations, with a focus on ensuring that all logistical details were in place for the main event.
13th August 2024: Full Dress Rehearsal at Red Fort
On 13th August, the full dress rehearsal took place at the Red Fort. The rehearsal was a critical run-through of the entire event, with all participants donning their uniforms and performing as they would on the actual day. The rehearsal allowed the organizers to fine-tune the event, ensuring that everything would run smoothly on Independence Day.
15th August 2024: Independence Day Event
On the morning of 15th August, 2024, participants arrived at the Red Fort at 4:30 AM. The cadets were seated in their designated areas. The event began with Prime Minister Narendra Modi visiting Rajghat at 7:00 AM to pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi, after which he arrived at the Red Fort at 7:30 AM.
The Prime Minister first extended his greetings to the Army personnel and then entered the Red Fort through the Lahori Gate. The national flag was hoisted, followed by a 21-gun salute and a flower shower from three helicopters over the NSS and NCC cadets. Then, the Prime Minister delivered a 2-hour speech, addressing the nation on various important issues.
The highlight of the day was the opportunity to listen to the Prime Minister's Independence Day speech live from the Red Fort. The volunteers, along with thousands of citizens, gathered to hear the address that encapsulated the nation's aspirations, challenges, and the path forward. The Prime Minister's speech was filled with messages of hope, resilience, and a call to action for the youth of India. The emphasis on nation-building, innovation, and self-reliance resonated deeply with the volunteers, inspiring them to take on greater responsibilities as future leaders of the nation.
The atmosphere at the Red Fort was electrifying, charged with patriotic fervor. The celebration was a vivid reminder of the country’s journey over the past 77 years and the remarkable progress it has made. The event also reinforced the importance of being active and responsible citizens, contributing positively to society.
The NSS volunteers also had the opportunity to interact with NCC cadets from different parts of India. The interaction fostered a sense of unity and camaraderie among the young people. It also provided a platform for exchange of ideas and experiences.
Following the speech, the Prime Minister met with the cadets, interacted with them closely and even shaked hands. He also mingled with the visitors and spectators present at the event before departing in his car. The event concluded shortly afterward, with media personnel interviewing the cadets, including Bhavisya Chaturvedi (AIML Dept.), Shurti Yadav (CSE, Dept.) and many others.
The visit to the Red Fort had a lasting impact on the NSS volunteers. The experience has reignited their commitment to service and social responsibility. Inspired by the Prime Minister's call to action, the volunteers were more determined than ever to participate in nation-building activities. They pledged to carry forward the spirit of Independence by engaging in various community service initiatives, awareness campaigns, and projects aimed at uplifting the underprivileged sections of society.
The history lessons imbibed within the walls of the Red Fort became tangible realities as they stood in the very place where India’s tryst with destiny began. The participation instilled a deep sense of pride and a profound respect for the values of freedom and democracy that India stands for today.
