SUMMER SCHOOL ON DATA SCIENCE

20th June – 20th July, 2017

MIC, Dronacharya College of Engineering Gurgaon organized a summer school on “Data Science” from 20th June - 20th July 2017. Ms. Anu Rani, Assistant Professor (IT, CSIT & ECS), was the trainer of the Summer School.

The objective of the summer school was to give the students exposure to the arena of Data Science.

Technology is changing the world in remarkable ways and creating opportunity for people who have the skills that are in highest demand. The education requirements for Data Science roles are among the steepest in the IT industry.   Around 40% of all such positions need students to hold the Data Analytics skills. The Microsoft Professional Program was created to help people to gain these technical skills and get real-world experience through a series of online courses that feature hands-on labs and expert instructors.

Week 1 :20th June – 25 June

In the 1st week Data Science Summer School students enrolled for Data Science track of Microsoft on Microsoft and edX website. They started with the course Data Science Orientation on edX. Ms. Anu delivered lectures on Basics of statistics. The content delivered in lectures was helpful for Data Science Orientation course. Topics covered: Measure of central tendency- Mean, Median, Mode, Measure of dispersion- Range, Standard deviation, variance, Hypothesis testing, T Test, Two sample T-test, Paired T test, Association analysis: Correlation, Predictive analysis - Regression. Students completed quizzes and lab exercise on edX account.

Test 1 was taken to evaluate the performance of students. Qualifying criteria for test was 20 out of 30 marks. The students scored more than 20 marks they benefitted with free voucher of Data Science Orientation course worth RS 99$.

In R Programming Language Vectors, Matrix and List covered during 1st week. Students registered for the course introduction to R for Data Science on edX. Students practiced R skills on R client software and on online platform of Data Camp. Students completed 3 Modules with quizzes and lab exercises on Data Camp platform.

Week 2 : 26th June - 2nd July

In the second week 2nd test was taken to improve the performance of students. All students performed well in Test 2.  Further Ms. Anu demonstrated Conditional formatting, Graphs (Line chart, Bar chart, histogram, scatter plot, box plot, PI chart, column Chart etc.) and Conditional formatting using Excel 2016.

In R Programming Language Factors, Data Frames and Graphics covered during 2nd week. Students completed quizzes and lab exercises online on Data Camp platform. There were 7 modules of Introduction to R for Data Science Course. All the students completed 7 Modules with quizzes and lab exercise.

Week 3 : 3rd July - 9th July

During 3rdweek of summer school, students were evaluated for the Introduction to R for Data Science Course. The course consisted of final test on Data Camp website. Test was conducted in college lab. Qualifying criteria for the test was 70% marks and awarded with free voucher for the course worth RS 99$.

Students registered for the Data Analytics using Excel course on edX. They completed Importing Data in Excel, Cleaning Data, removing duplicates, Pivot Table and pivot charts, Formatting data into tables, creating dashboards and performed statistical analysis using Excel 2016. Students practiced on Datasets available on edX account. They completed quizzes and lab exercises on edX account.

Week 4 : 10th July – 16th July

In 4th week students registered for R programming for Data Science. Topics covered: Control statements, Functions, Loops and Graphics. To practice the R programming Ms. Anu given one assignment of seven Array operations using Vectors using R. Seven operations of array was creating array, inserting data, Search element, deleting data, replace element, merging two arrays, exiting from program.  All the students successfully completed the assignment.

Week 5 : 17th July – 20th July

In last week of summer school students Ms Anu delivered the lectures on Reading and writing Data (TXT, SQL, CSV, DAT), Manipulation in Data using R. Students completed Quizzes and Lab exercises on edX account.

Ms. Anu delivered the lectures on Machine Learning with IRIS dataset using R. Student learned the use of Machine Learning in daily life examples.  The IRIS dataset includes three iris species with 50 samples each as well as some properties about each flower. The columns in this dataset: Id, SepalLengthCm, SepalWidthCm, PetalLengthCm, PetalWidthCm, Species. They performed the practical of iris dataset using R on R client software. Students learned Importing Data, Visualizing Data, Applying Machine Learning algorithm, Evaluating Algorithm, Presenting Results using R.

On the last day of summer school, Ms. Megha Goel (HOD IT) interacted with the students. It was an elaborative session on the learning and progress of the students. She motivated the students to pursue career and B.Tech project in Data Science.

On the completion of the summer school all the students got two certifications of Data Science Track of Microsoft namely Data Science Orientation and Introduction to R Programming Language.  Certification has authentication of Microsoft and edX.
