4th International Conference on Nano and Materials Science New York (USA)
January 7 - 9 New York, USA
ICNMS 2016
4TH International Conference on Nano & Materials Science (ICNMS 2016) organized by South Asia Institute of Science and Engineering (SAISE) , China on January 7 - 9, 2016 was held in New York , USA. The aim of ICNMS 2016 is to present the latest research and results of scientists related to Nano and Materials Science topics. This conference provided opportunities for the different areas delegates to exchange new ideas and application experiences face to face, to establish business or research relations and to find global partners for future collaboration.
The Conference was inaugurated by Prof. (Dr.) Chun-Hung Chen, George Mason University, USA. While addressing the delegates Prof. Chen talked about Optimization of Engineering Design with Ordinal Transformation and Optimal sampling .
Ordinal Transformation is framework to exploit the benefits of both high and low - fidelity simulation models to efficiently identify a (near) optimal solution. High - fidelity simulations generate accurate predictions but can be very time - consuming to, therefore applied to a small number of solutions. On the other hand Low - fidelity simulations are much faster and can evaluate a large number of solutions, but this simulation results may contain significant bias and variability.
Simulation models of different levels of fidelity are often available for evaluating alternative solutions of a complex system. Hence, Multi fidelity optimization provides a means to achieve design optimization at reduced computational cost by using a high - fidelity model in combination with lower - fidelity model.
Prof. Chen cited, the goal is to maximize the overall efficiency and it is effectiveness of approach being applied to machine problem in semiconductor manufacturing need to be observed which opens up a new and potentially fruitful research avenue.
Prof. (Dr.) Ridha Ben Mrad (Professor in Mechanical and Industrial Engineering) University of Toronto, Canada, in his key note speech spoke about high performance Micro - electrostatic for adaptive optics and display applications. He explained that plane micro actuators can be used in many applications such as adaptive optics, spatial light modulation, positioning micro lenses for auto focusing or zooming, micromanipulators and vector display. These applications require the manipulation of masses with milligram size and generation of out-of-plane displacement ranging from few to hundreds of micrometers.
A micro actuator is a microscopic servomechanism that supplies and transmits a measured amount of energy for the operation of another mechanism or system.
Prof. Mrad presented novel Micro electrostatic actuators as dual - stage actuator for high - density disk drive, using a voice coil motor (VCM) rotary actuator as a coarse actuator and a linear micro electrostatic actuator as a fine actuator. The actuator has a fast and stable dynamic response with a related setting of parameters. He showed how micro - activators can be used for developing number of applications including 3D micro mirrors for vector display and optical image stabilization in phone camera’s.
Currently Prof. Ridha Ben Mrad and his Research Team in collaboration with Industrial Partners, are developing novel precision and micro actuators for Micro mirror display application, large stroke piezo actuators for direct actuation in diesel engine injectors, high power density energy harvesting using smart materials for self - powered sensors and digital micro fluidic chips for applications in genomics and proteomics.

Prof. (Dr.) B.M.K. Prasad from Dronacharya College of Engineering, Gurgaon presented his paper on “High - Resolution Spectroscopy through Tunable, Ultrastable optical Radiation Diode Lasers”, on January 08th, 2016.High Resolution Spectroscopy is a tool used in surface science. The inelastic scattering of electrons from surfaces is utilized to study electronic excitations or vibrational modes of the surface or of molecules adsorbed to a surface. The optical phenomenon with laser technology in spectroscopy can be used with continuous tenability, reliability, stability and simplicity in operation. Due to spectral availability and good tenability diode lasers are well suitable for variety of laser spectroscopic applications.
Prof. Prasad said that through experimental layout it has been observed that atomic coherence is required for relative phase locking of different lasers between individual rotational and vibrational molecular states. For the excellent short term stability and relatively small frequency noise bandwidth there is a common advantage to diode lasers with resonant optical feedback.
In the experimental set up, diffraction takes place through transmission grating when the light is emitted by a laser diode. The first diffraction is coupled into a folded cavity with the efficiency of ninety five percent which provides an optical feedback to the laser diode and the two identical diode lasers are used at constant temperature. The tuning is ranged continuously corresponding up to 20GHz and the performance of a beat - note is measured between two lasers to demonstrate the excellent short - term frequency stability. Through these processes it infers a short - term linewidth of 10ms time scale from the 16.1 KHz to 11.4 KHz for an individual diode laser.
Prof. Prasad said the combination of two concepts i.e., the diode laser with resonant optical feedback and the grating diode laser, merges superb short - term frequency stability with excellent tunability and reliability. The excellent performance makes this diode laser concept the first choice for applications that requires broadly tunable, ultrastable optical radiation. The atomic and molecular coherence experiments are prominent examples which required phase locking between different lasers or between lasers and on optical frequency comb.
