Faculty Development Program on “Mobile Computing”
National Institute for Technical Teacher’s Training (NITTTR), Chandigarh always brings many opportunities for faculty members to excel in their career and help them adapt to technological changes. Dronacharya College of Engineering, Gurgaon in association with NITTTR, Chandigarh conducted a four days FDP on “Mobile Computing”through ICT from 25th - 29th January, 2016. 27 Faculty Members from various departments of Dronacharya College of Engineering, Gurgaon participated in the workshop. In total 15 colleges across the country were connected. The main objective of this workshop was to introduce the basic concepts and principles in mobile computing. This includes the major techniques involved, and networks & system issues for the design and implementation of mobile computing systems and applications.
Day 1 : 25th January 2016
The FDP was inaugurated by Prof. (Dr.) M. P. Poonia, Director, NITTTR Chandigarh, by giving a remarkable speech. The esteemed guests of the participating institutions also introduced themselves. Dr. Poonia continued her speech with the objectives of the event and gave a brief idea of the four day program. From DCE Gurgaon, Prof. Vishal Bharti, HOD CSE & local coordinator for STC the, introduced our chief guest Prof. (Dr.) B. M. K. Prasad, Principal, DCE Gurgaon.
Then next session was taken by Dr. Maitreyee Dutta, Professor & Head, Dept. of Electronics & Communication, NITTTR Chandigarh. She discussed about the mobile computing, A technology that allows transmission of data, via a computer, without having to be connected to a fixed physical link. She explained about the mobile communication, mobile hardware and mobile software. She also discussed about the 5G (5th generation mobile networks or 5th generation wireless systems) denotes the next major phase of mobile telecommunications standards beyond the current 4G standards. 5G has speeds beyond what the current 4G can offer. A new mobile generation has appeared approximately every 10 years since the first 1G system, Nordic Mobile Telephone, was introduced in 1982. The first '2G' system was commercially deployed in 1992, and the first 3G system appeared in 2001. 4G systems fully compliant with IMT Advanced were first standardized in 2012. The development of the 2G (GSM) and 3G (IMT-2000 and UMTS) standards took about 10 years from the official start of the R & D projects, and development of 4G systems began in 2001 or 2002.
The afternoon session was taken by Dr. Sukhbasi Lal Sachan, Professor, Dept. of Electronics & Comm., NITTTR on cellular communication cell design. Cellular communication is an umbrella term used in biology and more in depth in biophysics and biochemistry to identify different types of communication methods between living cells. Some of the methods include cell signaling among others. This process allows millions of cells to communicate and work together to perform important bodily processes that are necessary to survival. Both multi-cellular and unicellular organisms heavily rely on cell-cell communication. He also discussed cellular system design and the techniques currently used to entertain the ever growing community of wireless users with extreme emphasis on speech quality, system reliability, quality of service and cost of service.
Day 2 : 27th January 2016
The second day session started with a presentation on Mobile computing by Mr. Mayank Arora, Professor, Dept. of Computer Science & Engineering CCET, Chandigarh. He discussed about the basic idea of Cloud Computing, Deployment models, Services models, Mobile Cloud Computing Basic model and architecture of Mobile Cloud Computing. Then he talked about the various ongoing researches have been discussed in the field of Offloading.
Then in the next session he talked about cloud computing and its use in wireless communication. Cloud computing is a type of computing that relies on sharing computing resources rather than having Local servers or personal devices to handle applications. In the word cloud computing cloud is used as a metaphor for the internet. The phrase cloud computing means a type of Internet-based computing, where different services - such as servers, storage and applications - are delivered to an organization’s computers and devices through the Internet. He explained that mobile computing Extending battery lifetime: Computation offloading migrates large computations and complex processing from resource - limited devices (i.e., mobile devices) to resourceful machines (i.e., servers in clouds).
The afternoon session was taken by Er. Garima Saini, Assistant Professor, NITTTR on G. S. M. Architecture. GSM(Global System for Mobile Communications), is a standard developed by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) to describe the protocols for second- generation (2G) digital cellular networks used by mobile phones, first deployed in Finland in July 1991. GSM is a cellular network, which means that cell phones connect to it by searching for cells in the immediate vicinity. There are five different cell sizes in a GSM network - macro, micro, pico, femto, and umbrella cells. The coverage area of each cell varies according to the implementation environment.
Day 3 : 28th January 2016
The Third day session was started by Mr. Kapil Bhutani from Telcocrates Technologies on GSM / GPRS Air Interface.General packet Radio Service (GPRS) is an enhancement of GPS, which is packet oriented mobile data service on the 2G and 3G cellular communication system. It provide connection to the external packet data network through the GSM infrastructure with short access time to the network for independent short packets. It uses exactly the same physical radio channel as GSM and only new logical GPRS Radio Channel are defined. GPRS was originally standardized by European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) in response to the earlier CDPD & i - mode packet - switched cellular technologies. He discussed about Operating Systems, Introductions to android, Open handset alliances, OHA Alliances GPRS Architecture and Infrastructure Model.
The afternoon session was taken by Er. Garima Saini, Assistant Professor, NITTTR on Subscriber Identity Module. A subscriber identity module or subscriber identification module (SIM) is an integrated circuit chip that is intended to securely store the international mobile subscriber identity (IMSI) number and its related key, which are used to identify and authenticate subscribers on mobile telephony devices (such as mobile phones and computers). It is also possible to store contacts on many SIM cards. SIM cards are always used on GSM phones; for CDMA phones, they are only needed for newer LTE - capable handsets. SIM cards can also be used in satellite phones.
Day 4 : 29th January 2016
The Fourth day session was started on Cellular Phone Maintenance and Repair by Mr. Ram Niwas from Sony Services.During this session, he discussed about ESD TOOLS (ELECTROSTATIC DISCHARGE), ESD Kit, Anti - static Tweezers, Cleaning Brushes, ESD Jacket, Heel Grounder etc. Electro - Static Discharge, ESD is one of the few things which can do damage or destroy your computer or parts in your computer. Like the shock you receive when rubbing your feet on the carpet and touching something metal, ESD can occur when working in your computer and can cause damage to components. ESD can occur without the user feeling a shock and only occurs while working on the inside of the computer or handling an expansion card or other hardware.
Then Next Session was on CDMA vs GSM was presented by Dr. Sachan with hand off Procedure in CDMA and hand off Thresholds in IS - 95.
The workshop concluded with the feedback and evaluation session conducted by Dr M. P. Poonia. The workshop was very knowledgeable .The attendee faculty members of the workshop were very pleased with the exposure, knowledge gained in this four day duration. They got to know about so many current research areas related to mobile computing technologies like 4G services and the coming 5G services.
