International Conference on PPP Model for Waste to Worth Projects

Mr. Manish Kumar Mishra (Assistant Professor)from ME Department of Dronacharya College of Engineering, Gurgaon attended the international conference on “PPP Model for Waste to Worth Projects” organized by Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) at The Grand Hotel, New Delhi on 30th November 2017.
The main objective of the conference was to bring domestic and international technology providers, investors, Swachh Bharat Mission Directors and Municipal authorities on a single platform. The idea was to discuss and suggest techno-business solutions for keeping cities clean in a sustainable manner.
Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has set up a CII Task Force on Waste to Worth in order to support the Prime Minister’s Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM). The objective of the Task Force was to facilitate participation of investors and technology providers, for management of Municipal Solid Wastes (MSW) on a PPP model basis.
The various sessions during the conference where as follows:
Session-1 (Current PPP Models of MSW Management Projects in India)
In the session, Mr. Kamal Maheshwari (President, Essel Infraprojects), Mr. Sundeep Kumar (Sr. Vice President, IL&FS Environmental Infrastructure & Services), Mr. M. Goutham Reddy (Managing Director and CEO, RamkyEnviro Engineers) Mr. Umesh Chopra (CEO , Jindal ITF) Mr.Vinay Maheshwari (President, JBM Ltd) and Mr. Ulhas. Parlikar (Head & Director, Geocycle India – ACC), demonstrated their best projects and PPP models operational in Indian cities and towns. They also shared the issues, concerns and suggestions for improvement in process. Ms. Cheryl Hicks (Executive Director, Toilet Board Coalition) gave the keynote address on circular sanitation economy in India.
Session-2 (International Perspective in MSW Management)
In the session, Mr. Gerd Deusser(Vice President- Power & Gas Siemens Ltd.), Mr. Rakesh Aggarwal (Managing Director, Ecogreen Energy), Mr. Robert Jans (Director, Ekolog), Mr. Osten Ekengren (Executive Vice President, IVL SvenskaMiljöinstitutet), Mr. Jan Grimbrandt (CEO- Chairman of the Board Boson Energy) and Mr. Fabian Weingart (Director, TII India) shared their global experience to manage MSW. They demonstrated their best project and PPP model operational in their respective country. They also gave their recommendation on most appropriate technology systems in India, required finance model for MSW projects and changes required for current PPP model in the country to be attractive.
Session-3 (MSW Management in Cities/Towns)
In the session, senior officials of municipal corporations and companies Dr. Sunil Kumar (Senior Scientist, CSIR-NEERI), Shri V. Umashankar, IAS (Commissioner, Municipal Corporation Gurgaon), Mr. Pradeep Khandelwal (Chief Engineer, East Delhi Municipal Corporation), Mr. Ved Prakash (Commissioner, Municipal Corporation Jabalpur) and Mr. Ulhas. Parlikar (Head & Director, Geocycle India – ACC)} shared the status of MSW management as well as challenges and issues faced by them in their cities/ towns and the need for private sector partnership.
Session-4 (Opportunities and Issues Relating to off Take of Electricity and Compost Produced from Municipal Solid Waste)
In the session, Mr. K.K Sharma (Director, West Bengal Power Development Corporation Former Director (Operations), NTPC), Mr. Sanjay Srivastava (Head- Power Management, BSES Rajdhani Power), Dr. G. Ravi Prasad (President – Corporate Affairs and Strategic Projects Coromandel International) and Mr. Sohan Lal(General Manager (Marketing), National Fertilizer) discussed their views on opportunities and issues relating to off take of electricity and compost produced from municipal solid waste in India.
It was a great learning experience for all the participants.
