IEEE Live Streaming on 5G’s Role in Internet of Things
17th November, 2016
IEEE Communication Society organized a live streaming on “5G’s Role in Internet of Things” on 17th November 2016. 44 students from CSE Department of Dronacharya College of Engineering, Gurgaon attended the live streaming.
The moderator of the streaming was Douglas McCormick, New York City-based freelance writer and communications consultant specializing in technology and life science. The speaker of the first session was Dr. Amitava Ghosh, Head, North American Radio Systems Research, Nokia Networks. Dr. Ghosh provides strategic and technical leadership for the Motorola/Nokia networks business, responsible for bringing HSDPA, WiMAX, and LTE technology from concept to standards, trial, and commercialization.
During the session, Dr. Gosh explained with the help of 5G, one can increase the data rate, reduce the end-to-end latency and improve coverage. These properties are particularly important for many applications related to IoT. Quoting an example, Dr. Ghosh said in an emerging autonomous cars and intelligent transportation small latency is essential.
Dr. Ghosh said Internet of Things will be the ideal application for 5G. What currently stands in the way of the IoT are disconnected systems. Dr. Ghosh giving an example, explained in RIFD, short-range communications techniques, UWB, Blue Tooth, etc., and this could be a problem in the future if one talk, a bigger picture like a smart city, where a unified framework for seamless connection is required. 5G is a good opportunity to provide this unified framework.
Dr. Gosh also discussed a new architecture, new communication technologies, and new hardware will make this transformation possible. The speaker discussed the points related to Public safety, Digital health, Mobility, industries, other smart cities, Utilities, Smart homes, Retail Services and IT. He also discussed the challenges to that are-Robust Connectivity: Latency, Availability, Coverage, Cost. After the presentation of Dr. Ghosh, a question and answer session was held, in which all the participants cleared their doubt.
It was knowledgeable session for all the participants.
