Guest Lecture on Basics Concepts in Engineering Physics
6th November 2017
ISTE Student Chapter, Dronacharya College of Engineering, Gurgaon had organized a guest lecture on Basics Concepts in Engineering Physics for the students of CSE-1 year on 6th November 2017. The speaker for the lecture was Dr.Ravi Kant Soni, Department of Physics, IIT-Delhi and heads a group investigating laser and ion induced nano patterning, core-shell nanostructures, and pulse laser ablation of gold nano `particles for surface enhanced florescence and Raman spectroscopy.
Prof. Ravi Kant Soni initiated his first lecture session with basics of Interference and Diffraction patterns. He explained the term Interference and the types of Interference giving a brief explanation on constructive and destructive Interference and the conditions required for sustainable interference. He then gave a brief overview of the Young’s double slit experiment which is used to prove the particle and wave nature of light and also find the wavelength of monochromatic source of light. Next he explained the formation of fringes and switched to the topic of diffraction. He explained the basic meaning of diffraction and the application of diffraction. He discussed Diffraction Grating which is an important device that makes use of diffraction of light to produce spectra and help in studying the holography and crystals. The first session ended with the explanation of Newton’s Ring experiment and its variants.
In the second session Prof. Ravi emphasized on the topics of Laser and Fiber optics. In Fiber optics he explained the concept of Cone, Critical angle, Numerical Aperture and Acceptance angle. He gave solid points on the attenuation of signals inside the optical fiber and explained the types of optical fiber’s available. He gave the differences between single mode and multimode fibers and ended the lecture by giving the two main applications of optical fiber i.e. Optical Communication and Fiber Optic sensors (optical biosensors). He also explained the basics of LASER. He addressed the students on various types of laser and their uses. He also emphasized on the working of Ruby Laser and mentioned the drawbacks of Ruby Laser and explained why it was discarded.
In Third and Fourth lecture sessions Prof. Ravi emphasized on the topics of Superconductivity, Dielectrics and Special theory of relativity. He began by explaining the term superconductivity and told the history of superconductivity. Other topics in superconductivity were explained such as: Conditions for superconductivity, Meissner effect, London equations, Type 1 superconductors, Type 2 superconductors, BCS Theory and Cooper Pairs. At last he explained the applications of superconductivity such as: SQUID (Superconductivity Quantum Interference Devices), Maglev trains, Magnetic levitation devices and Superconducting shields.
He concluded the session by clearing the doubts of students and motivating the students to get interested in the field of fiber optics due to the popularity and extensive research of this field in IIT-DELHI.
The lecture has proved to be inspiring and informative for the students.
