Workshop on Combating Fraud Activities using Data Science
11th January 2020
Faculty member Mrs. Akancha Shekhar, Dronacharya College of Engineering, Gurugram attended the workshop on “Combating Fraud Activities using Data Science” organized by Laboratory for Computational Social Systems (LCS2) at IIIT Delhi on 11th January 2020.
The objective of the workshop was to study the impact of fraudulent activities in Social Science, Journalism, Product Reviews, Forged Imagery, Cybercrime, and Finance.
The inauguration ceremony was done under the esteemed presence of Mr. Ranjan Bose (Director IIIT Delhi), Dr. Tanmay Chakraborty (Assistant Prof. IIIT Delhi) and Mr. Shad Akhtar (Assistant Professor, IIIT Delhi).
Workshop started with the welcome address given by Mr. Ranjan Bose. Next Ms. P.N. Vasanti (Director General, Center for Media Studies) gave the keynote presentation. She told, CMS setup the first Media Lab in India that studies trends in both electronic and print media. CMS develop strategies, which meet the needs of the media world. She further told in India only 2 or 3 media channels shows original news rest all the other channels show fake news and fake news go viral immediately. She explained to the participant not to immediately believe, what is shown on media or on any of the social platform. Just go through all the concept and reality behind the information before believing the information.
Next session was taken by Dr. Sriparna Saha (Associate Professor, IIT Patna) on microblog summarization. She explained social networking sites such as Twitter have become the primary sources for real-time information of ongoing events such as political rallies, natural disasters etc. At the time of occurrence of natural disasters, it has been seen that relevant information collected from tweets can help in different ways. Therefore, there is a need to develop an automated microblog/tweet summarization system to automatically select relevant tweets.
Next was the presentation by two Ph.D. students of IITD namely Shivangi Singhal and Sarah Masud. They gave presentation of their research work.
Later, Dr. Deepak Padmanabhan (Lecturer, Queen’s University BelFast) took the session and explained about the fake news detection. He said, a plenty of social media platforms are available to exchange information rapidly. Such a rapid propagation and accumulation of information form a deluge; in which it is hard to believe all the pieces of information since it appears to be very realistic. In this context, characterizing and recognizing misinformation, especially, fake news, is a highly recommended computational task as this can mislead others. He explained Data Types of relevance for Fake News. He further explained, fake news characterization and detection are the computational studies that focus to get rid of the highly malicious news creation and propagation. He then explained Two Families of Approaches i.e ML Approach and DB Approach.
Next Dr. Tanmoy Chakraborty (Assistant Professor, IIITD) told about their LCS2 (Laboratory for computational social system). He told all the ongoing working projects and proposed work being carried on in their Lab. He also told about the funding and scholarship received to them from different govt. and private agencies.
In the lunch break there was a poster session in which ongoing research paper of the students of IIITD were shown.
Next Ms. Anushree Bishnoi and Mr. Ankur Pandey, Founder of Unfound AI took the session. They told about their organization and how they deal with fake news. They told UnFound is a powerhouse of deep learning based Natural Language Processing techniques. They use their own technology to signal content’s credibility, fact check claims and surface contrasting viewpoints for a complete understanding of any topic.
Next some of the techniques for fake news detection using Data Science is explained by Mr. Girish Keshav Palshikar (TCS Research) and Dr. Vikram Goyal (Head and Associate Professor IIIT D). Subhabrata Dutta, PhD student of IITD presented his research paper in the last session of the workshop.
Workshop ended with the certification distribution ceremony and vote of thanks by Dr. Tanmoy Chakraborty.
