QEEE Sessions on Gears and Gear Trains
24th, 25th & 27th January 2017
QEEE session on " Gears and Gear Trains " was organized by IIT, Madras underD2S (Direct to Student) Program at Dronacharya College of Engineering, Gurgaon through ICT on 24th, 25th and 27th Jan 2017.The session was conducted by Prof. Abhijit Sarkar, IIT Madras. The session was attended by 24 students of 4th semester Mechanical Engineering under the guidance of Faculty Coordinator Mr. Rajesh Mattoo, Associate Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering.
FIRST SESSION:
The first session was held on 24th January 2017. Prof. Abhijit Sarkar gave brief introduction of spur gear. He told spur gear is a gearwheel with teeth projecting parallel to the wheel's axis. Further he described various terminology Pitch surface , Pitch circle Addendum circle. . Explaining fundamental law of gearing, Prof. Abhijit told the fundamental law of gearing states that the angular velocity ratio between the gears of a gear set must remain constant throughout the mesh.He also explained conjugate action for Involute tooth profile
SECOND SESSION:
The second session was held on 25th January 2017. Prof. Abhijit Sarkar began the session with the explanation of how Forces
on gear system can be calculated under various condition along with that he also took the initiative to reply the question asked in chat by various colleges within the given time constraint. The second session covered the following topics: Contact Ratio,
Interference and Undercutting, Minimum number of teeth to avoid interference
THIRD SESSION:
The third session was held on 27th January 2017.
Prof. Abhijit Sarkar explained the difference between Simple & Compound Gear trains. He told in a simple gear train, some of the gears are connected to the same shaft whereas in a compound gear train, each gear has its own shaft for rotation. In simple gear trains, the final gear ratio is determined by the driver and driven gears whereas in compound gear trains increase power transfer more than simple gear train.
He also gave a brief explanation on Application of Gears and Gear Trains.
The sessions were fruitful to the students as they have helped the students in revising the concept of Gears and Gear Trains
