Industrial Visit to Syail Edge Tool India Pvt. Ltd.
27th October 2023
Institution’s Innovation Council and SAE Student Chapter, Dronacharya College of Engineering, Gurugram organized an ‘Industrial Visit’ to “Syail Edge Tool India Pvt. Ltd.” on 27th October, 2023. It was a significant learning opportunity for the students of 3rd and 5th semester B.Tech Mechanical Engineering. The visit, which lasted for two enlightening hours, served as a bridge between the theoretical knowledge acquired in the classroom and the practical applications of cutting-edge technology and manufacturing processes.
Mr. Satish Dawar of Syail Edge Tool India Pvt. Ltd. welcomed the students and briefed about the company and its functions. Syail Edge Tool India Pvt. Ltd. is a renowned industry-leading manufacturer that excels in producing cutting-edge precision tools marked by innovation and manufacturing excellence. Specializing in the creation of highly specialized cutting tools, the company utilizes poly crystal diamonds (PCD) and cubic boron nitride (CBN) in their production. These cutting tools, primarily in the form of inserts, are meticulously integrated into base tools primarily crafted from tungsten carbide through precise abrasive grinding processes. The company's stellar reputation as a top-tier manufacturer is well-earned due to their unwavering commitment to excellence and innovation. In fact, they proudly hold the distinction of being the second company, after Motherson Group, engaged in the manufacturing of the cutting tools. Their superior products are widely supplied to diverse industries where precision and efficiency are paramount.
The visit was made more enriching by the host, Mr. Satish Dawar, and his colleagues, who went above and beyond to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the company's operations.
Manufacturing Processes:
Mr. Satish began the visit by explaining the theoretical aspects of the manufacturing processes. This laid a strong foundation for the students to appreciate the intricacies of producing PCD and CBN cutting tools. It's worth noting that PCD tools are renowned for their exceptional hardness, wear resistance, and thermal stability. These qualities make them ideal for cutting tough materials and enable them to endure high-speed cutting operations with minimal wear, resulting in extended tool life. Furthermore, PCD tools can withstand high temperatures without compromising their cutting edge and are generally chemically inert.
CBN tools, on the other hand, are engineered from extremely hard materials capable of withstanding extreme temperatures and forces. They represent the future of cutting tools.
The Machines:
The company's plant was equipped with an impressive array of machinery. Students were treated to a hands-on demonstration of the machinery and its operation. The machines included wire EDM, tool presetters, universal surface grinders, induction brazing machines, and the Focus VMS system. These machines play a crucial role in the production and refinement of cutting tools, highlighting the company's dedication to precision and innovation.
Interaction with Workers:
One of the standout aspects of the visit was the students' opportunity to interact with the skilled workers. These workers were not only approachable but also eager to share their insights and knowledge. They answered students' queries and provided valuable practical insights into the art of manufacturing cutting tools. The hands-on-interaction left a lasting impression on the students and enhanced their understanding of the industry.
Future Prospects:
As part of the visit, students expressed curiosity about the company's future prospects and trends in the industry. Mr. Satish informed about the hiring process by the company.
Quality Control and Safety:
Quality control and safety were emphasized during the visit, highlighting the company's commitment to excellence. The importance of maintaining strict quality standards in the manufacturing of cutting tools was emphasized, as even the slightest imperfection could have a significant impact on performance. Moreover, safety measures were demonstrated and explained, underlining the company's dedication to the well-being of its workforce.
Practical Applications:
The visit also offered students the opportunity to witness practical applications of the cutting tools. They observed how these tools were put to use in various industrial applications, reinforcing the link between theory and practice.
Industrial visit to Syail Edge Tool India Pvt. Ltd. was an eye-opening experience for the students. It provided them with valuable practical insights, hands-on experience with cutting-edge technology, and a deeper understanding of the manufacturing processes behind PCD and CBN cutting tools.
The industrial visit was a significant stepping stone in their educational and professional development.
