Self Defence Training Program
3rd - 4th January 2022
In today's times the crimes against women are on rise. It doesn’t matter if you are at proximity of your home or at a workplace, you are always at risk of becoming a victim. When an attack occurs on a personal level, it is very likely that you are alone. In such scenarios, it is only you who has to protect yourself by using self-defense techniques. We have always focussed on education as a toolkit to empower women, but self-defense is also equally important for the safety of our daughters.
Keeping these circumstances in mind, The Women Development Cell of Dronacharya College of Engineering, Gururgram organized a “Self Defence Training Program” on 3rd & 4th January, 2022. The program was organized with the initiative to train its female students, faculty & staff against any kind of verbal and physical abuse. Trainer of the program was Capt. Manjula Katoch. Program started with an inaugural speech by Principal Prof.(Dr.) Isha Malhotra. She expressed her grief on how the newspapers each day are filled with articles on domestic violence, assault and eve teasing and later explained how it is the need of the hour to prepare our daughters against any form of violence.
Day 1: of the program involved demonstration, students were demonstrated the self-defense techniques and tips to protect themselves. It included various points like, trying to be aware of your surroundings, seeing who is following you, parking cars in well-lit areas, trying to walk through a more crowded place, trying to change your routes from time to time. Next step is to defend yourself from the preparator by trying to push back and be as loud as possible to attract attention. Last step is to attack the most vulnerable body part so that you can get time to run and leave the place. Later on many techniques of defending yourself from an attack were shown like wrist hold, outsider strike, bear hug, hand edge etc.
Day 2: of the program involved practicing those self-defense techniques. Students tried various techniques which could help them to release themselves from the clutches of the attacker. Like how to react when the attacker is holding your hand, or when he is holding you from the back. Students participated actively and practiced these techniques. Later on students were told about the safety equipment like pepper spray or a stun gun that they can carry, which can help them in times of emergency. Girls were told to remain calm in such situations and act wisely to defend themselves.
The event ended with the vote of thanks from Principal Prof. (Dr.) Isha Malhotra. She advised all the participants to be alert and vigilant of their surroundings and try to defend themselves with the help of techniques taught, in the times of emergency.
