“Building your Own Smart Phone”
at NITTTR, Chandigarh

A five - day Short term course on “Building Your Own Smart Phone” was conducted by Department of Computer Science & Engineering, NITTTR Chandigarh in collaboration with Indira Gandhi Delhi Technical University for Women, Delhiunder the aegis of MY_SMARTPHONE Project from 16th to 20th May, 2016 at NITTTR, Chandigarh campus. The objective of this course was to introduce the importance and use of Raspberry Pi & Python Programming in building Smart Phone. Twenty - four faculty members of 12 Engineering colleges participated in the Short term course. Mr. Chandra Shekhar Singh (Assistant Professor) & Mr. Krishanu Kundu (Assistant Professor) from Electrical & Electronics Engineering Department of Dronacharya College of Engineering, Gurgaon attended the Short term course.
Course Objective:
1. To get clear concepts regarding Raspberry Pi.
2. To be familiar with Python Programming.
3. To get knowledge on GUI Interfacing.
4. Finally to utilize the interfacing concepts of various sensors, communication modules in building Smart Phone.
DAY 1
Day one started with registration of the participants. In inaugural session Prof. Dr. C. Rama Krishna, HoD, CSE Dept.,NITTTR Chandigarh & Course Coordinator briefed participants about the mission and vision of the Short term course. He added that the idea is to incorporate the utilization of Raspberry Pi, Linux Operating system, Python Programming & Java into building smart phones with the objective of engaging students and teachers through exciting hands - on application of engineering principles. The following session was conducted by Mr. Sanjay Kumar (Associate with Indira Gandhi Delhi Technical University for Women, Delhi) where he discussed Introduction to Linux & commands on LINUX platform.
Post lunch session was all about Basics of Python Programming, OS Customization & Installation & Case Study of mobile operating system using Linux / Windows / Android. In this session Participants got a clear idea on concepts of Python programming and the procedure of writing programs on Python platform.
DAY 2
Day two started with basic concepts on interfacing of Basic embedded components like Led, Buzzer, LCD etc throughRaspberry Pi. The session was covered by Mr. Rachit Thukral, (Associate with Indira Gandhi Delhi Technical University for Women, Delhi). Later the session moved on with hands on training on the above mentioned topics using Raspberry Pi & Python Programming. Participants performed hands on sessions on programming like Blink your LED, Start your Buzzer & display your message on LCD. The hands on session also focused on programs like Camera interfacing & Automatic photo capturing.
Post lunch session was briefed by Ms. Sonal (Associate with Indira Gandhi Delhi Technical University for Women, Delhi). The main topic of the session was Database Management using MySql. Participants got a clear idea on how to write Programming in MySql platform to create database.
DAY 3
Day three started with discussion on interfacing of sensors like DHT11 (Temperature & Humidity Sensor), ADXL345(Accelerometer) & TSL2561 (light sensor) through Raspberry Pi. The session was well conducted by Ms. Nidhi Agarwal (Phd. Scholar at Indira Gandhi Delhi Technical University for Women, Delhi). Participants also performed hands on interfacing different types of sensors with Raspberry Pi.
Post lunch session was all about Graphical User Interface with Raspberry Pi & utility of interfacing of communication modules like GSM & Bluetooth. Ms. Jasleen Kaur (Phd. Scholar at Indira Gandhi Delhi Technical University for Women, Delhi) focussed on the key topics regarding the smart phone orientation. Participants also got clear concepts onRaspberry Pi serial port setting.
DAY 4
Day four was dedicated to the introduction to building Smart phone and Mobile Architecture & Programming. The session was well conducted by Dr.S. Ramanarayana Reddy, HoD, CSE Dept at Indira Gandhi Delhi Technical University for Women, Delhi. Prof Reddy demonstrated the installation of Android Operating system & running of apk files on Raspberry Pi. Participants also gathered concepts on Tkinter module.
In post lunch session Ms. Jasleen Kaur & Ms. Nidhi Agarwal (Phd. Scholar at Indira Gandhi Delhi Technical University for Women, Delhi) engaged the participants in hands on training of interfacing Audio Playback withRaspberry Pi. The Participants also gained knowledge on Multimedia Connectivity with Database & Mobile Application.
DAY 5
Day 5 was all about the Familiarization with GUI development on Raspberry Pi, a session on Familiarization withAndroid application development for communication with Raspberry Pi concepts. It was conducted by Dr. S. Ramanarayana Reddy, HoD, CSE Dept at Indira Gandhi Delhi Technical University for Women, Delhi. The session was really very helpful as participants came to know various issues related to interfacing of various sensors with Raspberry Pi and facts that interfacing plays a significant role in field of Smart phone creation.
It was followed by query and doubt clearing sessions. It was really interactive and truly knowledgeable session with fruitful gain of knowledge.
