Workshop on Business Ethics & Corporate Governance

Dronacharya College of Engineering, Gurgaon and Consultancy Development Centre, (Autonomous Institution of DSIR, Ministry of Science & Technology, Govt. of India, New Delhi) jointly organized a workshop on “Business Ethics and Corporate Governance” on 13th May 2016.
The objective of the workshop was to provide a platform for the industry representatives, academicians, researchers and students to understand and discuss the significant benefits business ethics can bring to any business. Thirty seven participants from different companies (such as from V.R. Engineers, Gurgaon; Dezlum Tech Pvt. Ltd., Gurgaon; Fire Motors Pvt. Ltd., Gurgaon; Gokart Systems & Education, Gurgaon; Amazon, Hyderabad; Contingent Blithe Retail LLP, Gurgaon; dwarkawala.com, Dwarka etc.) attended the program.
The event was inaugurated in the gracious presence of the invited speaker Mr. Rahul Kaushik, TARC (Training and Research Consortium). Inaugurating the event, Principal Dr. Karanjit Singh said, any business or organization can run successfully if it follows principles and ethics which in turn make it reliable. He also mentioned a balance in economy and society is to be taken into account by every organization.
During the technical session, the invited speaker Mr. Rahul disseminated the concepts related to ethics and its importance in corporate world. He delivered an interactive session by discussing practical scenarios where ethics and governance play significant role in the functioning of an organization. He discussed, the Performance Improvement Plan, role of a Chief Ethics Officer in an organization, the significance of doing the things the ethical way and the right thing. He also threw some light on characteristics the employers look for in a potential candidate while hiring.
The session then moved towards a group activity where the participants were divided into 4 teams and each team had to come up with the mission, vision, core values and goals of an organization. The four teams: Spark, Automation Industry, Gokart and Virago, presented their ideas and all agreed on the core values such as integrity, team work, dedication, reliability, timely delivery and coordination with society and balance between profits and social responsibility to be included in the working of any organization. Through the activity, the expert speaker explained how an organization achieves success by integrating and practicing these values in their system.
In the next session, Mrs. Diksha Chaudhary introduced the concept of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) to the participants. She discussed the importance of the role of the corporate sector in maintaining a balance between economy, society and environment. She also deliberated the prominent steps taken by the corporate sector in the field of CSR by presenting several case studies such as the ‘Save our Tigers’ mission by NDTV Group, P&G ‘Shiksha Abhiyaan’ and the ‘Swatchh Banega India’ initiative by Dettol, among others. She also discussed the instances where the CSR code was violated and heavy penalties were imposed on such companies.
Next there is query sessions where participants discussed their doubts .
In the end Mementos were presented to the expert speakers and the programme ended with a vote of thanks by the Convener Prof. (Dr.) Neelam Ruhil.
