Applications of Dynamic Ratings in Real - Time Operation of Grid
23rd June 2015
IEEE Delhi Chapter organized a technical talk on Applications of Dynamic Ratings in Real - Time Operation of Grid byDr. N. D. R. Sharma on 23rd June 2015 at IIT Delhi. Five students namely, Ayush Bansal (16035), Bharti Sachdeva (16039), Aarusi Tuteja (16002), Abhishek Nehra (16004), and Mandisha Sharma(16085) from Computer Science and Engineering Department of Dronacharya College of Engineering, Gurgaon, attended the lecture.
Dr. Sharma is currently involved in a Synchrophasor Project, ERCOT funded by DOE, USA under the Smart Grid Initiatives Grants and organizes several panel sessions at the IEEE Power Engineering Society General Meetings.
He discussed about the importance of Dynamic Ratings Application, transmission companies and the maximum power level (transmission transfer capability) that can be transmitted over these power transmission lines at any given time. He said that how the companies in present scenario take advantage of all the transmission resources to the fullest to maximize profits. He highlighted that this knowledge enables industries to serve load reliably and secure adequate financial gains without compromising system wide reliability, in particular during system contingencies. Historically, transmission companies have used fixed thermal limits on their transmission lines to determine transfer capabilities. These constant ratings are determined conservatively due to a lack of knowledge of the actual operating conditions, which limits the ability of transmission companies to fully exploit actual transmission capabilities. With the help of presentation, he explained Dynamic Ratings Applications developed at Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) which incorporates dynamic ratings of transmission equipment to improve operational efficiency in real-time operation of the grid at ERCOT. He also discussed about the various operations conducted at weather forecasting stations.
In the end there was an interactive questions and answers session in which students raised questions and their doubts about the topic and Dr. Sharma spontaneously answered their queries. It was a great learning experience for them as they got detailed explanations about various concepts related to Applications of Dynamic Ratings in Real-Time Operation of Grid.
