The screening was organized on 7th February, 2020. Students, faculty and staff members actively participated in the event.
The documentary “Periods: End of Sentence” is based on the lives of women living in a rural area of Hapur district, Delhi as they fight against the embarrassment that surrounds menstruation. The movie is divided into 5 parts. First part of the movie highlights the stigma that surrounds menstruation. When the interviewer asks women questions regarding periods, they giggle and get embarrassed. When the same question is asked to males of the village, they think of menstruation as a disease that affects only women. The first part of the movie highlights the lack of education regarding female hygiene. Next part tells about the effects of using alternatives other than sanitary pads. It tells how women have to drop out of school after a certain age because of lack of any sanitation facilities. In the next part of the movie, a sanitary pad making machine is introduced, and the interviewer explains how the machine works and its role in making low cost sanitary pads. The fourth part of the movie highlights women using machines to produce sanitary pads and sell them across the village. They name their pads “FLY” to highlight their importance in empowerment of women. In the last part of the documentary, women are seen talking about how the use of sanitary pads have made their lives simpler and had a positive impact on their health as well.
The event ended with a vote of thanks from Principal Prof.(Dr.) Isha Malhotra. She encouraged everyone to take little steps on their part to help remove the taboo that surrounds menstruation, and help in increasing awareness about female hygiene and healthcare.
