Technology Demonstration for Rural Entrepreneurship: A UBA-CSIR-VIBHA Initiative

To foster a new dialogue within the larger community on science, society and the environment and to develop a sense of dignity and collective destiny, a one day event on “Technology Demonstration for Rural Entrepreneurship”, was organized by Unnat Bharat Abhiyan, Indian Institute of Technology, in association with Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), and Vijnana Bharati (VIBHA), on 19^th March 2021, at IRD Conference Room, Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi. Mr. Amar Saraswat, Assistant Professor, Department of Information Technology, Dronacharya College of Engineering, Gurgaon attended the event.

Setting up the context, Prof. Virendra K Vijay, National Coordinator, Unnat Bharat Abhiyan, motivated the participants to create a virtuous cycle between society and an inclusive academic system by providing knowledge and practices for emerging professions and to upgrade the capabilities of both the public and the private sectors in responding to the development needs of rural India.

After that, Dr. Ranjana Aggarwal, Director, CSIR-National Institute of Science Technology and Development Studies (NISTDAS), New Delhi expressed her views to boost rural livelihood. After that, Sh. Praveen Ramdas, National Secretary, Vijnana Bharati (VIBHA) discussed improving development outcomes, and to develop new professions and new processes to sustain and absorb the outcomes of research.

Then, Prof. Arun Kumar Sharma, North East Centre for Technology Application and Reach (NECTAR), New Delhi discussed that how the PI’s can be benefited from NECTAR, which aims at harnessing and leveraging niche frontier technologies available with central scientific departments and institutions. He also discussed that NECTAR will be ensuring applications of appropriate technologies for development in the areas of biodiversity concerns, watershed management, telemedicine, horticulture, infrastructure planning & development, planning and monitoring, and tele-schooling using cutting-edge MESHNET solutions, employment generation etc. through utilization of local products/resources and associated skill development.

After that, Dr. Pankaj Arya, CSIR-Indian Institute of Petroleum (IIP) Dehradun, presented his research work on “Improved Jaggery Making Plant “Gur Bhatti””. Dr. Arya explained that Jaggery making is one among the major agro-processing industries of rural India and Jaggery making industry has been struggling for its existence due to the heavy pollution and low profitability. Dr. Arya said that CSIR-Indian Institute of Petroleum took an initiative to revive this agro-industry through its improved Jaggery making plant design, in which low cost techniques applied in the improved plant design reduced the emissions to significant levels and also improved the overall thermal efficiency of the plant.

Explaining about the benefits of his work, Dr. Arya stated that the overall performance of 25% fuel saving and 15% increased daily production capacity gathered the attention of many sugarcane farmers across the country. This has resulted in improved local air quality, increase in the annual income of farmers and additional job creation in rural areas.

Then, Dr. Anjineyulu Kothakota, CSIR-National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology (NIIST), Thiruvananthapuram discussed the process for making biodegradable plates, cups and cutleries from agricultural residues and waste. Dr. Kothakota said that the developed product is made from wheat barn, sugar cane bagasse, rice husk, fruit peels and pineapple leaves and is shelf stable up to the period of 10 to 12 months and heat resistant up to the temperature of 100 0 C. It is found to be ideal for replacing the single use plastics and also the above said technology have been licensed and transferred two MSME’s for commercial production. It can be used in classic ovens/ microwave oven.

Then, Dr. Sunil Mishra, CSIR-Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT), discussed Sericulture and the research and development contributed by him in order to get the maximum benefit from it. After that Dr. Rakshak Kumkar, CSIR-Institute of Himalayan Bio Resource Technology (IHBT), Palampur discussed Vitamin D2-enriched Shiitake mushroom production and processing. In the end, Ms. Farhat Azad, CSIR- National Institute of Science, Technology and Development (NISTADS), New Delhi discussed the Mobile application for supply chain and freight transportation management system for farmers.

In the end, Prof. Vivek Kumar, Unnat Bharat Abhiyan, summarized the event and said that UBA works solely for transformational change in rural development processes by leveraging knowledge institutions to help build the architecture of an Inclusive India. After that, Prof. Priyanka Kaushal, Unnat Bharat Abhiyan delivered the vote of thanks.
