FDP on Photonics and Optoelectronic Devices
21st - 25th February 2022
Ms. Akancha Shekhar (Assistant Professor, ECE Department) Dronacharya College of Engineering, Gurugram participated in the online AICTE Recognized Faculty Development Programme on “Photonics and Optoelectronics Devices ” from 21st - 25th February 2022 conducted by APS Department NITTTR Chandigarh through ICT.
Day 1: 21st February 2022
First session started with the registration and introduction of the participants. Prof. B.C Chaudhary (NITTTR Chandigarh) inaugurated the session and gave brief introduction of the 5 day Faculty Development Program.
In the second session, Prof. Chaudhary gave an overview of photonics and optoelectronic devices. He told the importance of photonics. Next he explained the working of optical communication. He explained optoelectronics and its system. Moving further, he told participants limitations of Electronics vs Potential of Photonics.
In the third session, Prof. Chaudhary explained “optical fibers- waveguiding fundamentals”. He explained following topics in the third session:
- Introduction to optical fiber
- Light propagation through optical fiber
- Optical Fiber Waveguiding.
- Total Internal Reflection, Acceptance Cone, Numerical Aperture
- Electromagnetic Theory Maxwell Equation
- Modes
- Bessel Function Solutions
- Classification of Optical Fiber
Day 2: 22nd February 2022
In the first session OFC System: Design Consideration and Analysis was explained by Prof. Chaudhary. Nest he explained the requirements for design and installation of OFC. He told Link Length and Maximum Data rate are the two parameters required for system communication. Next he explained Optical Transmitter. Difference between ILD’s and LED’s is described by Prof. Chaudhary. Next topic of discussion was Fiber Optic Cable. Prof. Chaudhary told there are two types of cable Multi mode and Single Mode.
In the second session, optical sources and optical detectors were explained by Dr. Balwinder Raj (Associate Professor, Department of ECE, NITTTR Chandigarh). He told there are two types of optical sources 1. LED (Light Emitting Diodes) 2. LASER (Light Amplification by stimulated Emission of Radiation). Characteristics of LED and LASER were explained by Dr. Raj.
In the third session, Prof. Randhir Bhatnagar (Ex- Chief Scientist, CSIR Chandigarh) explained different types of Display Devices ( LCD, OLED, QD , PD Array, PSD, CCD and MCT ) . Next he explained photovoltaic effect, modulation of light. Some of the applications of optoelectronics devices were also told by Prof. Bhatnagar.
Day 3: 23rd February 2022
Prof. Chaudhary took the first session of the day and explained basics of optical fiber, types of optical fibers materials. He told there are three optical fiber materials Fused Silica Fiber , Plastic Fiber and other glass fiber. Next he explained types of optical fiber and transmission characteristics of optical fiber. He told the factors which affect the performance of optical fibers. Next he explained two major communication issues 1. Attenuation 2. Dispersion. He told losses in the optical fiber are due to Material Absorption, Scattering (Linear and Non-Linear), Bending (Microbends and Macrobends) and Interface inhomogenities.
WDM and DWDM were explained by Prof. Chaudhary in the second session. In his session he covered the topics

- Engineering Solutions and Future Trends
- Non-linear Effects in Optical Fiber
- PTDS- Simulations and Analysis.
In the third session, Demo lab Video was shown by Prof. Chaudhary.
Day 4: 24th February 2022
First session of 4th day started with the discussion on Photonic Crystal Fibers by Prof. Randhir Bhatnagar. He explained some of the features of classical optical fiber and its limitations. Then he explained Photonic Cyrstals (PhCs). He told depending on geometry of structure PhCs can be divided into three broad categories,
1D - Photonic Cyrstals , 2D - Photonic Cyrstals and 3D - Photonic Cyrstals.
Next he gave brief description of Photonic Crystal Fiber and Photonic Crystal Laser.
Second session of the day was taken by Mr. Jaspreet Singh (CEO, Fiberonics, New Delhi ). He explained typical optical communication link. Then he told some of the important factors why to choose OFC. Next he told the spectral bands of Optical Fiber Communication. He showed to the participant’s typical optical waveguide structures. Moving further, He explained Si Electronic Devices.
In the third session Silicon Photonics was explained through simulations.
Day 5: 25th February 2022
In the first session Prof. Chaudhary explained Optical Wireless Communication Technologies. He gave brief description of generation of Telecom Networks. Some important characteristics of future 5G/6G Network was also described by Prof. Chaudhary. Next he explained Fiber Optics Technology. He also gave description of Optical Wireless Communication.
T. Srinivas took the second session and explained Quantum Information Technology. He told Quantum Technology is information that is held in the state of a quantum system. Then explained in brief history, quibits, quantum gates, quantum computers, quantum communication, future of quantum technology, integrated photonics in Quantum Technologies and Quantum Information Technology Research in Applied Photonics Lab, ECE, IISc.
Last Session was evaluation and Valediction session.
