Smart India Hackathon (SIH)
INNOVATE | BUILD | TRANSFORM
India’s largest Student Innovation Challenge
About Smart India Hackathon
Smart India Hackathon (SIH) is one of India’s largest open innovation initiatives designed to encourage students to solve real-world problems using technology, creativity, and interdisciplinary collaboration. The program provides a national platform where students from engineering, management, and other academic disciplines work together to develop practical solutions for challenges faced by government ministries, industries, and social organizations.
Launched by the Ministry of Education, Government of India, and supported by AICTE, MIC (Ministry of Education’s Innovation Cell), and other partner organizations, SIH aims to strengthen the culture of innovation and problem-solving among young minds. Every year, thousands of students from institutions across the country participate in the competition, making it one of the most prestigious hackathons in India.
The hackathon is conducted in two primary formats:
Software Edition: In the software edition, teams work intensively over a 36-hour coding period to develop digital solutions such as applications, platforms, algorithms, or intelligent systems that address real-world challenges.
Hardware Edition: The hardware edition focuses on building working prototypes, physical systems, or integrated hardware-software solutions. Teams design and demonstrate functional models that solve technical or societal problems through engineering innovation.
Before reaching the national finals, teams go through multiple selection stages. Initially, institutions organize internal hackathons, where the most promising ideas are shortlisted. These selected ideas are then submitted to the national SIH portal for evaluation by experts from academia, industry, and government. Only the most innovative and feasible proposals are selected for the Grand Finale, which takes place at various prestigious institutions across India.
During the finale, teams collaborate, design, code, prototype, and present their solutions within a limited time frame while being mentored by domain experts. This immersive experience not only enhances technical skills but also develops abilities such as teamwork, leadership, communication, and creative problem-solving.
Over the years, Smart India Hackathon has become a powerful initiative for promoting innovation-driven learning, bridging the gap between academic knowledge and real-world application. It encourages students to think beyond textbooks and contribute meaningfully to national development through technology and innovation.
