ISTE STTP workshop on Engineering Physics
7th to 11th September 2015
IIT Bombay organized a one Week ISTE STTP workshop on Engineering Physics for Coordinators under the National Mission on Education through ICT (MHRD, Govt. of India). Dr. Surender, Associate Professor, Department of Applied Science and Humanities department of Dronacharya College of Engineering, Gurgaon attended the workshop from 7th to 11th September 2015.
The ISTE STTP initiative is a part of the 'National Mission on Education through ICT,' which is supported by Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India( MHRD). The objective of this STTP was to provide a complete orientation to the prospective Workshop Coordinators, on the methodology to be followed to generate awareness on the various physics related problems. The course consists of several basic areas of physics with emphasis on applications of principles of physics.
The topics covered in the STTP were:
1. Optics: Interference, Diffraction, polarization, Fiber optics, Lasers and holography.
2. Electrostatics and Electrodynamics: Maxwell’s equations in differential form, concept of vector potential and gauge, wave propagation in free space and dielectric media, Poynting theorem.
3. Special Theory of Relativity: Inertial frames, Michelson Morley experiment, Lorentz transformation, Mass energy relation.4. Quantum Mechanics: Compton effect, Born concept, Postulates of quantum mechanics, particle in a box, potential barrier and tunneling.
5. Crystallography and Solid State: Crystalline and amorphous solids, Miller indices, Bragg’s law and Laue method, Free electron theory, Brillouin zone and reciprocal lattice, Magnetic materials, Superconductivity and applications.
6. Nuclear Physics: Radioactivity, Nuclear reactions, Fission and Fusion, Liquid drop model, Particle accelerator, Standard model of particle physics.
On 7th September, 2015, Prof. Deepak B. Phatak, Principal Investigator T10KT Project, IIT Mumbai delivered the inaugural speech and discussed various methodologies adopted for enhancing engineering education. He discussed about flip lecture. Prof. Kannan Moudgalya, Co ordinator of STTP of Engineering Physics discussed T10KT project and virtual labs. He said that basic objective of virtual labs are to provide a complete Learning Management System where the students can avail the various tools for learning, including additional web-resources, video-lectures, animated demonstrations and self-evaluation. He added that another aspect of virtual labs are to share costly equipment and resources, which are otherwise available to limited number of users due to constraints of cost and geographical distances. Prof. C. V. Tomy, Head of Department of Physics, IIT Bombay discussed about ASK QUESTION website (http://www.ask.com/). He said it is the best place to ask and answer questions. The morning session began with the presentation of Electromagnetism - I, by Prof Dipan K Ghosh. He discussed about various topics of electromagnetism like concept of field, vector field and its mathematical representation, electric field and potential field ,electric flux and Gauss’s law and dielectrics Prof. Shiva Prasad discussed Maxwell equation and gave his new definition “Failure of Maxwell’s – Boltzmann Doctrine regarding equitation of energy”. He emphasized over Frame of reference and its velocity. Prof Ghosh began the evening session on Electromagnetism-II and highlighted on electrostatic boundary condition, Poisson’s and Laplace equation.
On 8th Sept, 2015, Dr. Mukta Atrey, from the Administration Team of Empowerment of Teachers Programme & Mrs. Jaya Gaitonde, Sr. Project Manager explained the ways in which the workshop is to be organized in the remote centers and pointed out the necessary steps that are to be taken and briefed about the software they are to be used for conducting the workshop in remote centers. Prof. Shiva Parasad described various topics related with Relativity-1 and empathizes was given on the topic transformation coordinate and velocity transformation.
In Laboratory session Prof. K.G.Suresh discussed the various physics experiment physically like Laser experiment, e/m experiment, Bi-prism experiment, Grating experiment.
On 9th Sept., 2015 , Prof. Dipan Ghosh discussed the role of Electromagnetism-3 and gave more emphasize on the topic like Magneto-static, vector potential, Compton effect, photoelectric effect, short coming of free electron theory, dual nature of light. Prof. Shiva Parasad discussed informative lecture on Failure of classic mechanic and overcome of the quantum, Faraday law, mutual inductance, self-inductance and energy density and pointing theorem.
On 10th Sept., 2015 session started with the presentation on Optics - I by Prof. Dipan Ghosh. He highlighted on several topics like Young Double slit experiment and discussed duality of wave nature. Prof. Shiva Parasad, delivered lecture onQuantum mechanics - III with the detailed analysis of Schordinger wave equation and gave physical significance of wave function and importance of Miller Indices.
On 11th Sept., 2015 Prof. K.G. Suresh discussed numerous topics of magnetism like Diamagnetism, Paramagnetism, Ferro-Magnetism and Anti Ferro-Magnetism and explained the importance of magnetism in physics as well as in computer industry. Prof. Dipan Ghosh gave brief introduction on experimental survey of superconductivity.
The participants then asked questions based on the topic and the experts answered their queries and cleared their doubts. After the valedictory session certificate of participation was awarded to the attendees.
